Fred Chappell was born and raised in the small Central American country of El Salvador. He was stationed in Germany as a young Army soldier during World War II and fought alongside General George Patton. After his discharge from the army, he became a missionary to Central America where he taught English for thirty-five years. In 1985, after nearly thirty years of teaching, Fred retired from the ministry to take up writing full time
